CLEARWAY SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE RECOGNITION FROM THE 2011 BOSTON GLOBE SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS

Clearway School is proud to announce that two students have received Key Awards in the 2011 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Competition.   In addition five Clearway students; Alex Blanchard, Stephanie Foster, Jenna Gelinas, James Green and Evan Moll received Honorable Mention Awards for their submissions.

Senior, Alex Karnes was presented with the “Gold Key Award” for his Art Portfolio. This award is the most prestigious award of the competition and is given to the student who has submitted a portfolio of eight pieces judged as the most outstanding submission in the competition. As the winner of over 600 art and writing portfolios submitted by high school seniors Alex will receive the only $2,000. scholarship. As part of this submission Alex wrote an artist’s statement. He was quoted in the Boston Globe stating he wants his work to “veritably spew a sense of grandeur, love, pride of workmanship, and lost of paradise to the viewer”.   Alex also received a “Gold Key Award” in mixed media for his piece entitled “A New Lease on Life”. Mixed media works are made from more than one medium and usually have a three-dimensional element. Alex’s portfolio and mixed media piece have been entered into the national competition in New York City.

Eighth grader, Natalia Brillati received a “Silver Key Award” for her work entitled “Walk on the Wild Side” in the Fashion Design category. Each of the pieces that won these Key Awards is on display for public viewing at the Massachusetts State Transportation Building in Boston until April 7, 2011. This is the 61st annual event and is recognized as the most competitive event in the history of the Scholastic Art Awards. More than 12,000 works in fifteen mediums including photography, painting, and fashion were entered into the competition and there were more than 400 schools across Massachusetts that competed.
